When looking for a computer monitor, the screen must have certain qualities to give the best picture. A flat screen CRT unit will have a maximum refresh rate of something like 120hz or above, which is great for gaming. Coatings provide antiglare properties that are of paramount importance. High tension wires, coupled with a grid ensure the picture is bright and remains crisp. Energy Star compliance ensures that the monitor goes into standby so as to prevent screen burn and avoid high energy consumption. LCD or tft computer monitors should have a high response rate (a little like the refresh rate on a CRT screen). A decent flat panel LCD screen will give a good even brightness over the entire picture, which prevents shadowing. The only downside with LCD and TFT screens is that the backlights (sodium cold cathode ray tubes) have a life expectancy of about 2000 hours. |
